A Year in Pictures: Chronicle photo staff's favorite images of 2022

In 2022, the Chronicle’s staff photographers published 8,896 pictures, chosen from tens of thousands of photos that never left the hard drive.

From those thousands of pictures, we’ve narrowed it down to eight that left an impression on us. Some of these images were chosen for their composition. Others, for the emotion they evoked.

These images are a visual record of southwest Montana in 2022. Our goal as photojournalists is to bring the reader to places they’ve never been, to help people understand others in their community, and to provide context for the issues we collectively face.
