Montana State guard Russell Daniels, seen here Feb. 2 against Montana, is transferring from MSU.

Russell Daniels and Max Schuecker are transferring from Montana State, the school confirmed Wednesday. The news was first reported by Stadium.

Daniels, a senior guard, spent one year at MSU after transferring from Florida Southwestern State. As a junior in 2018-19, he averaged 1.8 points, 1.4 assists and 15.1 minutes. Daniels appeared in 29 games, started 10 and made 34% of his shots. He was initially brought in to add point guard depth, a position that returns only second-team all-Big Sky senior Harald Frey.

Schuecker, a sophomore center, leaves the Bobcats after playing in 12 games as a freshman. In 36 minutes all season, Schuecker scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds and committed 10 turnovers and 13 fouls.

Daniels and Schuecker become the second and third players to leave the program, joining guard Lassi Nikkarinen, since head coach Danny Sprinkle was hired in early April.

“There may be a couple other changes depending on — the one thing I told the guys is the biggest thing with me is truth,” Sprinkle said in early May. “I'm going to tell you the truth. You may not like it right now but four, five years down the road, you're going to appreciate it. I'm not going to lie to them, tell them they're going to play 20 minutes if I don't think they're going to play. Then a lot of it will be their decision.”

Frey was a member of MSU’s search committee after former head coach Brian Fish’s contract was not renewed. Athletic director Leon Costello previously complimented Frey for communicating with teammates during the hiring process. Despite no players deciding to transfer prior to Sprinkle’s hiring, the coaching change coincided with three leaving the program.

The Bobcats entered the offseason with two scholarship spots available before the departures of Nikkarinen, Daniels and Schuecker. MSU has announced the additions of Missouri-Kansas City transfer guard Xavier Bishop, freshman forward Finn Fleute and freshman guard Zach Hobbs. On Wednesday, junior wing Amin Adamu announced his transfer to MSU. That leaves one scholarship remaining for the 2019-20 season.
