Sunshine and blue sky guided the way Saturday for 156 participants of the annual Jim Bridger Trail Run through Sypes Canyon.

Conditions were near perfect on Saturday morning, save for a large snowpack that runners had to slog through in the middle of the 10-mile, nearly 2,000 vertical foot climb due to an avalanche earlier this month.

That, and an occasional scrape or mud splatter around ankle level, seemed to be the only issue for runners who traversed the course and crossed the finish line hungry for the waiting spread of fajitas, water and - for the age appropriate - beer.

The snowpack made it hard to go after any sort of course record, unless it was a personal one, but it didn't seem to give many of the runners too much trouble.

"We just went a little slower on it and around it," 16-year-old Bridger Ski Foundation skier Noah Andersen said. Andersen and teammate Sam Miller graduated from the 5-kilometer run last season.

"It's kind of our first big race, first big thing of the year," Miller added. "It was definitely really long, but it feels good to be done with it. It's an accomplishment."

BSF Elite member Leif Zimmermann, who finished first overall in a time of 1 hour, 18 minutes and 52 seconds, noted conquering the snow came down to a choice: go over/through or around it.

"It definitely changed the route a little bit, but it almost made it a little more direct," Zimmermann said. "There's a ton of snow up there, you can't really tell how deep it goes, but I'd say it shortened the route and it was still firm."

Zimmermann led a corps of experienced Jim Bridger veterans, but at least a third of the participants were first-time trail runners.

Missoula native Kelly Webster won the women's race in her first trail run. Webster got her first look at the Bridger Mountains and marveled at their beauty.

"Oh my gosh, it was absolutely gorgeous," she said. "I've never been to the Bridger Mountains and I've never run in the mountains - it was just stunning."

Ennis' Gavin Owens, echoed her sentiments and called the snow "an interesting twist to the course."

Gavin came to support older brother Gage, who signed up for the race a month ago. The younger Owens said he saw a few of the T-shirts on display - one of the tents had all the annual JBTR T-shirts from 1995 to 2010 strung up - when the brothers came to the starting line and signed up.

"I wasn't expecting to run the race, but when I came out here (with Gage) I saw the shirt and it looked pretty cool. I said, ‘I'll run it,'" Gavin said.

"Just out here to have a little fun, run a race," Gage added. "It's the first trial run I've ever done, and it was neat. It was a lot of fun, I liked it. Really steep, obviously, but that made it fun."

The brothers noted it was a great training run. They are members of the Air Force Academy's cross country and track teams. Gage is 20 and will be a junior while 18-year-old Gavin will start his sophomore year.

Much of the chatter as runners came across - aside from joking ‘get me water' - was about how nice the course laid out and ran on Saturday.

"The whole trail in general... the course was in great shape given the size if that avalanche," Zimmermann said. "Coming over the top, the view of the mountains and canyon was nice.

"In general it was a perfect day."
