"Putting on the Dog: The Animal Origins of What We Wear" by Melissa Kwasny

In a passage about cashmere, author Melissa Kwasny states “Today I am wearing three goats.” It’s really the soft underbelly of the goat’s hair that makes up the basis of Kwasny’s cashmere sweater, but I like how her mind works in the insightful “Putting on the Dog: The Animal Origins of What We Wear.”

The book traverses the globe in its quest to uncover the materials we use to cover ourselves. Learn about pearls as Kwasny travels to Guaymas, Mexico, to visit the last pearl farm in the Americas or get insight into the processing of sheep’s wool a bit closer to home...at the Thirteen Mile Lamb and Wool Company outside Bozeman. Kwasny also delves into leather, feathers, silk and fur, allowing the reader to travel with her as she enlightens without judgment.

If you want to learn more, Kwasny will discuss “Putting on the Dog” at Country Bookshelf at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16.
