Alene Vogel

Alene Vogel passed peacefully at the age of 95 on June 19, 2017. She was born Nov. 18, 1921, in Valley City, North Dakota, and was the daughter of Edmond J. and Alice (Carpenter) Shrum. Alene was raised and educated in North Dakota and graduated from Bowman High School in 1939. She attended Kinman Business University in Spokane, Washington, and then worked as a secretary.

She married Rudy C. Vogel, Sept. 27, 1941, in Spokane, Washington. After Rudy’s years in the service, they moved to Bozeman, Montana, in April of 1947. Alene worked as a secretary in the Gallatin County Extension Office from 1957 to 1961, then as secretary to three Superintendents and as Supervisor of Accounts for Bozeman Public Schools from 1961 until retirement on July 31, 1979. Genealogy was her main interest for over 40 years, locating her family and those of friends. She and Rudy enjoyed camping, skiing, and trail cycling. They enjoyed traveling the States and Germany, Switzerland, Austria, New Zealand, and Australia. Alene went on Senior Center trips to Scandinavia, the British Isles and Nova Scotia. They spent 27 winters in Arizona. In 2006, they moved to Highgate Senior Living in Bozeman where Rudy died on Feb. 21, 2009.

Alene was a member and Past Matron of Lily of the Valley Order of the Eastern Star, member of First Presbyterian Church, Mount Hyalite Chapter of DAR, Gallatin County Historical Society, and Bozeman Senior Center. She volunteered at the Gallatin County Historical Society and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

Alene is survived by son, Douglas R. Vogel (Johanna); daughters, Linda (David) Seiler and Sheryl Vogel (Joe Griffin); grandson, Dylan Griffin (Majessa Kerner); granddaughters, Megan (David) Cohen and Katie Seiler (Patrick Hanners); great-granddaughter, Emerson Cohen; sister, Janet Nova; sister-in-law, Grace Shrum; and many nieces and nephews. Alene was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy; brother, Lawrence R. Shrum; sister, Marianne Whiting; and parents.

No services will be held; a family memorial will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to Gallatin History Museum, 317 W. Main Street, Bozeman MT 59715.
