The U.S. is committed to expanding the range of free-roaming bison herds throughout the Great Plains and intermountain region and intends to use disease-free Yellowstone bison as seed stock, according to a federal report.

On Monday, the Department of the Interior released a comprehensive report of the state of U.S. bison herds, the suitability of federal lands as bison habitat and a plan to distribute brucellosis-free Yellowstone bison to as many as 20 federal properties.

Wildlife groups greeted the report with some applause but also some criticism.
