A recreational vehicle caught fire Wednesday afternoon in a subdivision north of Bozeman, sending black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

The Central Valley Fire District responded to a report of a motorhome fire in a neighborhood off Valley Center Road just after 1 p.m. No one was inside the vehicle at the time of the fire. The vehicle was being used as a residence, according to a news release from the district.

The release said firefighters quickly knocked down the fire, which engulfed a third of the vehicle. The vehicle was behind another house on Stubbs Lane.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but the district said the fire appeared to be unintentional.
