A Gallatin County Search and Rescue team member died Sunday after falling rocks swept him and another man off the side of Mount Cowen in Park County.

Travis Swanson, 33, of Bozeman was retrieved by his fellow rescue team members, according to a Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Swanson was climbing with Jackson Negri and Will Hitchcock, also members of Gallatin County Search and Rescue.

Rocks swept Swanson and Hitchcock off the side of the mountain at about 11 a.m., the release said. Negri reported the incident to the Park County Sheriff’s Office.

Gallatin County Search and Rescue responded and, with Jackson’s help, retrieved Hitchcock and Swanson. Hitchcock is in stable condition at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings.

Swanson was a contributor to the alpine and helicopter rescue teams, the release said. He loved spending time with friends and saving people’s lives.

“When good days went bad, Travis was always there to help his community,” the release said.
