The Bozeman High School Hawkers speech and debate team won the Garden City Invitational meet in Missoula last weekend.

Bozeman won 196.5 points to beat No. 2, Flathead High, with 148.5 points and third place Glacier High with 144.5 points. All 15 of the state’s AA high schools competed, including Belgrade, the newest AA school.

Adam Thane, Bozeman’s head coach, said the competition was a good test for the Hawkers early in the season, and it showed how tight the race for the state championship will be this year. Without the points earned by Bozeman’s novice debaters, the team would have come in second, he said.

The Hawkers had an “incredibly strong showing” in the team debate events, policy debate and public forum debate, Thane said. The team also had strong showings in humorous interpretation and informative speaking.

Bozeman’s individual results were:

--Varsity policy debate: first, Megan Mahoney & Anna Sofianek; second, Nic Kuntz & Daniel Waterman; fifth, Lorelei Michael-Owens & Christian Poole.
