Bozeman High School’s Hawkers speech and debate team had a blowout win in the first competition of the season at the Eastern Montana Kickoff at Billings Senior High.

Bozeman’s varsity team won with 260.5 points to second place Billings West High with 84 points, while Billings Skyview came in third among large AA high schools with 35.5 points.

Thirty schools of all sizes participated in the Nov. 2 event, said Adam Thane, the Hawkers’ head coach.

“It was a strong start,” Thane wrote in an email, “where returners did well and the next generation showed that Bozeman has talent upcoming for the next few years.”

Three Forks High won among Class B schools with 47.5 points. Gardiner won among Class C schools with 24 points.

Bozeman’s junior varsity team earned 144 points, and its second JV team scored 60 points, though they were not competing for overall placing.

Bozeman competitors swept the top six spots in informative speaking, the top five spots in dramatic interpretation, the top four spots in duo interpretation, the top three in public forum debate and extemporaneous speaking, and seven of the top eight spots in varsity policy debate. The Hawkers also won first in four other categories.

The Hawkers next travel to Missoula for the Garden City Invitational, where all class AA schools will compete.
