A three-day jury trial has been scheduled for a transient man accused of having child porn and uploading some of the photos on an image and video hosting website.

Daniel French, 48, is scheduled to stand trial in Gallatin County District Court for felony sexual abuse of children beginning March 2. He has been held at the Gallatin Count jail since June on $35,000 bail.

French pleaded not guilty to the charge in June.

In July 2018, Yahoo Inc. tipped off a Bozeman detective that one of its users uploaded 67 photos of child pornography to Flickr in April 2018, according to charging documents. Yahoo reported that “DC Frenchy” was the account that uploaded the images, and shared phone numbers, an IP address and email addresses associated with the account.

A month later, police said in charging documents, Yahoo tipped off the detective that the account had uploaded other child pornography on several separate dates. The detective found that the account uploaded 106 photos of girls ages 6 to 14 engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

In December 2018, the detective and a Department of Homeland Security Investigations agent found French living in his car in the Walmart parking lot, charging documents said.

Police said French told the officers he was doing his own investigation into child porn because he was accused of molesting a child in Idaho. French said he searched, found and saved child porn on his cellphone as part of his own investigation, according to charging documents.

French told police he was aware having child porn was illegal and said he didn’t share the photos, charging documents said. French said he couldn’t save videos on his cellphone but described a video he recently saw of an 8- or 9-year-old girl and an older man, police said.

Officers seized French’s cellphone and in April found 1,026 child porn images of girls ages 7 to 17 years old either naked or performing sexual acts, charging documents said.

Later that day, the detective called law enforcement in Pocatello, Idaho, to corroborate French’s story about being investigated for child molestation. An Idaho officer provided the detective with four reports that involved “suspicious behavior” between French and children.
