A Belgrade man pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that accuse him of sexually assaulting a girl.

Glenn Bruce Belnap is charged with a felony sex crime. He appeared with his attorney Herman Watson in Gallatin County District Court before Judge John Brown.

Belnap has posted bail and was released after the hearing.

In November, a counselor told a sheriff’s detective that a girl was acting odd and made statements that Belnap had sexually assaulted her, according to charging documents. The counselor said the girl’s teachers were also concerned about her well-being and made reports to the Department of Public Health and Human Services.

The girl was evaluated by a pediatrician and later interviewed about the incident. During both evaluations, court documents say, the girl said Belnap had sexually assaulted her.

Police said in charging documents that the pediatrician and interviewer noted that the girl exhibited overly affectionate and inappropriate behavior during the examinations.

If convicted, Belnap could face up to a $50,000 fine and life in prison.
