Bail was set at $5,000 Wednesday for a Belgrade man accused of sexually assaulting a girl.

Glenn Bruce Belnap, 33, is charged with felony sexual assault. He appeared in Gallatin County Justice Court before Judge Bryan Adams.

Belnap was arrested on Tuesday after an investigation was launched earlier this month by the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Health and Human Services.

On Nov. 6, DPHHS reported that a girl had bruising and red marks on her body to the sheriff’s office, according to charging documents.

A counselor told a sheriff’s detective that the girl was acting odd and made statements that Belnap had sexually assaulted her, court documents allege. The counselor said the girl’s teachers were also concerned about her wellbeing and had made reports to DPHHS.

The girl was taken to a pediatrician and later interviewed about the incident. In both instances, court documents allege, the girl said Belnap had sexually assaulted her.

Police said in charging documents that the pediatrician and interviewer noted that the girl exhibited overly affectionate and inappropriate behavior throughout their talks.

In court on Wednesday, Judge Adams required that Belnap have no contact with people under 18 years old. He said that includes people living in Belnap’s home.

“In the event that does happen, it is incumbent upon you to act — not the other way around,” Adams said.

If convicted, Belnap could face up to 100 years in prison and up to a $50,000 fine.
