Authorities have identified the woman fatally shot last week in Bozeman as Cynthia Carol Wills, 59, of Bozeman.
Wills was killed Thursday evening at a mobile home park on West Main Street.
William Frederick Bailey, 56, faces a felony charge of deliberate homicide. Bailey was ordered held on $1 million bail Friday, and a prosecutor said circumstances of the shooting might support seeking the death penalty.
According to charging documents:
Officers responded to a report of two gunshots around 8 p.m. Thursday and found Wills groaning on the ground in Bailey’s driveway.
Officers then spotted Bailey leaving his home with a gun. Bailey dropped the gun and got on the ground upon an officer’s demand. He was was then taken to the Gallatin County jail.
Bailey said he and Wills had been living together since 2016, and he became upset after she allegedly starting spending time with another man. Bailey said he started drinking Thursday evening, and she left to hang out with another man.
Wills returned, and Bailey said they started arguing because he asked her to move out. Wills told Bailey she was going to “have someone visit him.” She left again.
Bailey grabbed a gun from his room because he said he felt threatened. He then threw the woman’s belongings onto the driveway.
Wills came back and threw something at his door. Bailey opened the door, pulled his gun and fired two rounds at Wills, knocking her to the ground.
Wills was taken to Bozeman Health Deaconess Hospital. She died Friday morning during surgery.
