MSU could have found a local designer for its new logo

As a creative professional, who has done dozens of logos for companies across the country, I wondered why Montana State University had to go to someone in Phoenix to do its logo when there are talented local designers as well as distinguished alumni who have garnered some of the top design awards in the country. In addition, MSU has a top notch design school filled with some brilliantly creative students.

The samples I saw were somewhat less than striking or cutting edge for a relatively high price. While there is always a lot of unseen background research and development, in the end it's how good does it really look. Too often what occurs is design by committee, which generally leads to a compromised, watered-down solution without vigor. I suspect this is the case in this instance.
