Flooding has caused an estimated $8.6 million in damage so far to public infrastructure in Montana, though that figure is likely to rise as flooding continues in the state, the governor’s office said Friday.
A written statement from Gov. Brian Schweitzer’s office put the current damage estimate at $8,601,039. State and local governments are responsible for $2,150,260 of that total.
Last week, Schweitzer asked the Obama administration to declare Montana a disaster area and make federal relief funds available to the state. Schweitzer on June 6 issued his own statewide disaster proclamation.
In a follow-up letter Thursday, the governor specifically asks that federal help be given to 31 counties in eastern and central Montana, as well as the Crow, Fort Belknap, Northern Cheyenne and Rocky Boy’s reservations.
