Montana campuses leaner, cheaper than national trends

The Montana University System responded Tuesday to a Wall Street Journal report that blamed “administrative bloat” at American colleges for fueling steep tuition hikes, arguing that Montana campuses are lean and a great deal for students.

Montana’s universities and colleges have hired more administrators than 10 years ago, but their ranks grew by only 17 percent, while student enrollment grew faster, by 26 percent, according to a report prepared for the Montana Board of Regents meeting in Helena.
