The Bozeman School District announced Monday that so many elementary students have signed up, especially in early grades, that mailing notices to tell families which schools their children are assigned to this fall will be delayed until Aug. 22.

The district originally planned to send out notices Aug. 12.

In addition, some children may have to be bumped from schools they have been attending to make room for students who live within the schools’ geographic attendance boundaries. Only fourth- and fifth-graders are grandfathered into out-of-attendance-area schools.

School officials must balance state class size limits, family wishes, budget shortfalls and space availability, Superintendent Kirk Miller said in a press release.

More than 600 new elementary students have registered since last spring.
