Four members of Bozeman High School's Hawkers speech and debate team qualified at the state tournament in Missoula this weekend to represent Montana at this summer's National Forensic League tournament in Kansas.
National qualifiers from Bozeman are Claire Babcock in Lincoln-Douglas debate, Monica Robinson and Natasha Sullivan in policy debate, and Isaiah Bertagnolli in humorous interpretation.
Several Hawkers are first alternates – Anna Kaveney and Natalie Wilkinson in public forum debate, Anna Atwell and Ruby Speth in policy debate, and Isaiah Bertagnolli and Camille Landon in duo interpretation. Second alternates are Devan Murfitt and Sean Swinford in policy debate.
Hawkers head coach Adam Thane said that despite not taking some of Bozeman's best debate finishers and “our team getting hammered by a stomach bug during the competition,” Bozeman came in second overall to Glacier High by two points and beat Flathead High by three points. In the debate events alone, Bozeman won handily over second-place Billings Senior High.
