Craig Cummings, principal of Heck-Quaw Elementary School, died from a “heart-related event,” Superintendent Candy Lubansky wrote today in a letter to families and school officials.

Cummings, 53, died at 9 p.m. Saturday after not regaining consciousness from the heart problem suffered Monday, Aug. 8, Lubansky stated in the letter.

Cummings was married and had three children, she wrote, and his family was around him when he died.

“Mr. Cummings’ passing leaves a huge hole in our school district’s heart and is a tremendous loss of professional talent and expertise,” Lubansky stated. “We shall miss him deeply and will continue to honor the many contributions he made for children here at the Belgrade School District.”

Dave Smith, assistant principal at Belgrade Intermediate School, will temporarily be in charge of Heck-Quaw, beginning Thursday, according to the letter.

A funeral for Cummings will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Belt at the Belt High School gym.

A local celebration of his life will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the Belgrade High School auditorium. Friends and family may gather at Heck-Quaw after the celebration.

Elementary counselors will hold a session for parents only from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Quaw music room to tell parents how to talk with children about grief and loss.
