Local ice cream maker Wilcoxson’s is under fire for an inflammatory comment it provided in response to a question on its Facebook page Wednesday morning.

An unidentified Facebook user asked the company on Sept. 21 whether its cookies and cream ice cream had gelatin in it. The user was concerned if the gelatin contained pork because the user was a self-identified Muslim.

Company president Matt Schaeffer said in a phone interview that he responded around 7 a.m., “We don’t deliver outside of Montana, certainly not Pakistan.”

The comment incited an immediate reaction from the original questioner, who is identified in a screenshot as being located near Sheridan, Wyo. Other Facebook users inundated the Wilcoxson’s page with their reactions as well, leading Schaeffer to shut down the page. Angry Internet users have resorted to posting their outrage to the forum site Reddit and the company’s Yelp page.

Schaeffer said his response was not racist. He was “overwhelmed with work,” had a break and went on the company’s Facebook page to respond to questions. The user had an icon next to the name that said “Pakistan,” Schaeffer said. Responding quickly, he said he jotted his response down.

“I thought he was making this comment from Pakistan,” Schaeffer said. “It wasn’t a racist comment… It was just an honest mistake.”

From there, the comment took on a life of its own, he said. People posted such nasty things on the Wilcoxson’s page that he deleted it and said, “It’s no longer going to be in existence.”

“I apologize if he took it wrong, that’s not what I meant by it. I guess I didn’t read the whole thing,” Schaeffer said. But the reaction to the answer “was bad. There were cuss words. It was just bad, so I just took (the Facebook page) down.”

Five comments calling Wilcoxson’s a racist company and calling for a boycott have been posted to its Yelp page as of 11 a.m. The Reddit thread has hundreds of posts.

Schaeffer said in a phone interview that all flavors of Wilcoxson’s ice cream contain kosher gelatin.

Correction

This story was changed on Sept. 26, 2012, to clarify that the person asking a question of Wilcoxson's Ice Cream on Facebook had an account specifying his location as being in Wyoming. Also, the last paragraph was changed to correct the fact that the company's president answered the Facebook user's question in a Chronicle interview, not on Facebook.

Hi! I'm an American Muslim who loves ice cream and hates overblown, oversensitive situations like this. I honestly think that Mr. Schaeffer did not mean anything racist by his comment. I'm way out in Virginia but I'd be very happy to invite him and his family for dinner (he can bring dessert!) and we can discuss this situation like rational human beings. Hope he gets some rest and is not so overwhelmed at work.

Well, we all need chill a bit. "We don't ship to Pakistan" is not a slur. I mean, really.

The more politically correct we make the world, the easier it is to perceive a hurt.

Those old enough (or perhaps youngster) to have seen the Dustin Hoffman starring movie, LENNY, may remember a scene in there where the protangonist uses the stage to shout to the audience that if you use a slur (the N-word, in this case) enough then it has no meaning.

It is HOW and the TONE one says something that matters.

Anyway, just for hoots and trivia - there are lots of US towns with Muslim names in North America.

A quick search, and one can find 565 names, 484 in America and 81 in Canada. Villages, towns, cities, mountains, lakes, rivers and etcetera, are etymologically Arabic, designated by locals long before the arrival of Columbus. Many of these names are in fact the same as names of Islamic places; Mecca in Indiana, Medina in Idaho, Medina in New York, Medina and Hazen in North Dakota, Medina in Ohio, Medina in Tennessee, Medina in Texas, Medina and Arva in Ontario, Mahomet in Illinois and Mona in Utah, are just a few noticeable names at the outset.

Was the question about the pork gelatin made by someone who is allergic to pork and had a true rason for inquiring, or a Muslim trying to stir up a discrimination claim, or a liberal trying to simply destroy a business out of envy?

I wonder if the commenter expressed his or her concern for American's brutally murdered by Muslims, here in the U.S. or abroad?

No comment about the bacon sundae sold at Burger King?

I hope there's just a little bit of pork gelatin in every gallon of Wilcoxon's ice cream. Just enough... It's made in the USA for American's who really enjoy pork in all forms.

I'll be buying a half gallon of Wilcoxson's to show my support.

To reallocalfarmer: You sure are worried about what other people eat. Reminds me of a neighbor across the street who rode his bike to work every day with a helmet and lights or walked in the winter, played tennis on his backyard court, had the wherewithal to eat all organic foods and extolled their virtues to anyone who would listen. Then one night while alone, eating a dinner of organic chicken, he choked on a chicken bone and died. He was found the next morning by the maid.

Would have been better to have some less than perfect eaters over as dinner guests than to eat his righteous organic chicken by himself, but most of us were tired of the sermons. Poor guy was a nice neighbor. My mom said he died with his seatbelt on.

Chew carefully.

Anyone can make a mistake. However, the poster inquired only about whether the ice cream contained pork gelatin or not. He didn't ask about delivery at all. So why did the owner respond only with the info that they didn't deliver to Pakistan?

I would have a bit more sympathy if the owner answered the question, and then maybe added the bit about delivery. But he didn't even do that. It seems more than a mistake at that point, more like deliberate rudeness.

Well, now the score is about 108 to 4 on comments on this vs a man that broke his babies legs. It is truely sad that people care so much more about a simple facebook comment that might be a little politically incorrect at best than a real problem. There have been several instances over the last couple months in the news about unprepared parents harming their babies. This is a real social problem that needs help from anyone that can help. I'm sure that none of these parents wanted to harm their little baby, but they didn't have the support and education that they should have. I don't know what the solution is, but caring more about ice cream isn't it.

BluSTi
BluSTi

I'm pretty sure nobody cares about the ice cream. However, I'm also pretty sure that in the scope of world events, a few folks getting whipped into a frenzy over a religious insult is, in fact, more pertinent. Nobody likes hearing that a baby has a slimeball as a father, but there isn't much dialog in that. He needs to go to prison, 'nuff said. There IS dialog in what some folks would view as an overly sensitive view of their chosen religion. My advice, post on the slimeball-daddy's article all day until you've had your fill. I posted there, my opinion has been voiced, and I "feel" better for it.

Although this may have been a misunderstanding, it seems like Mr. Schaeffer made a hasty assumption; he also didn't answer the consumer's question regarding ingredients. A person at his tier level within the company should possess the basic customer service skills needed to answer a simple question and one with such a job title should ensure the consumer's needs and questions are well understood before a response is made. Misunderstanding or not, there was a definite lack of tack regarding Mr. Schaffer's response.

While I can not say for certain that I would have reacted in the way that I am saying here, given what was said initially, this does sound like it is a case of a simple mistake, with a simple over-reaction. Once again, I admit that I might have reacted a bit stronger, but after only reading the article posted here, I would not have used vulgar language and such.

Another one who clings to the Constitution without actually understanding the document. The Constitution protection of free speech ONLY applies to governmental interference, NOT criticism of the populace.

The issue is that he was rude. End of story. Jews and Muslims can't eat pork. The question was a good one and he should have provided an actual answer as the public representative via Facebook of his brand. The person who submitted the question was praising his product and was simply concerned about the content of the gelatin. It was a bad decision vis a vis a business.

The comment was, in fact, rude. If, as the picture posted below is of the actual comment string and not edited to "highlight" the commentary, then not only was it rude, but from WAY out in left field.

Your interpretation of the Constitution however seems a bit lacking. The protection of free speech does in fact protect criticism of the populace. Criticism of the government and advocacy of unpopular ideas that people may find distasteful or against public policy are almost always permitted. There are exceptions to these general protections, including the Miller test for obscenity, child pornography laws, speech that incites imminent lawless action, and regulation of commercial speech such as advertising. This means that Mr. Shaeffer's ignorant comment is protected by the constitution, as is the wingnut that made a movie about Muhammed, and the wingnuts that have a museum dedicated to a 6000-year-old earth. Even your commentary is protected by law.

I called you out because of your frequent anti-Christian bigotry expressed on this website. I'm sorry if that upsets you.

Hitler was not a Christian. He rejected Christianity.

All of these are quotes from Adolf Hitler:

Night of 11th-12th July, 1941:

National Socialism and religion cannot exist together.... The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is Christianity's illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew. The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity.... Let it not be said that Christianity brought man the life of the soul, for that evolution was in the natural order of things. (p 6 & 7)
10th October, 1941, midday:

Christianity is a rebellion against natural law, a protest against nature. Taken to its logical extreme, Christianity would mean the systematic cultivation of the human failure. (p 43)
14th October, 1941, midday:

The best thing is to let Christianity die a natural death.... When understanding of the universe has become widespread... Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity.... Christianity has reached the peak of absurdity.... And that's why someday its structure will collapse.... ...the only way to get rid of Christianity is to allow it to die little by little.... Christianity the liar.... We'll see to it that the Churches cannot spread abroad teachings in conflict with the interests of the State. (p 49-52)
19th October, 1941, night:

The reason why the ancient world was so pure, light and serene was that it knew nothing of the two great scourges: the pox and Christianity.
21st October, 1941, midday:

Originally, Christianity was merely an incarnation of Bolshevism, the destroyer.... The decisive falsification of Jesus' doctrine was the work of St.Paul. He gave himself to this work... for the purposes of personal exploitation.... Didn't the world see, carried on right into the Middle Ages, the same old system of martyrs, tortures, faggots? Of old, it was in the name of Christianity. Today, it's in the name of Bolshevism. Yesterday the instigator was Saul: the instigator today, Mardochai. Saul was changed into St.Paul, and Mardochai into Karl Marx. By exterminating this pest, we shall do humanity a service of which our soldiers can have no idea. (p 63-65)
13th December, 1941, midnight:

Christianity is an invention of sick brains: one could imagine nothing more senseless, nor any more indecent way of turning the idea of the Godhead into a mockery.... .... When all is said, we have no reason to wish that the Italians and Spaniards should free themselves from the drug of Christianity. Let's be the only people who are immunised against the disease. (p 118 & 119)
14th December, 1941, midday:

Kerrl, with noblest of intentions, wanted to attempt a synthesis between National Socialism and Christianity. I don't believe the thing's possible, and I see the obstacle in Christianity itself.... Pure Christianity-- the Christianity of the catacombs-- is concerned with translating Christian doctrine into facts. It leads quite simply to the annihilation of mankind. It is merely whole-hearted Bolshevism, under a tinsel of metaphysics. (p 119 & 120)
9th April, 1942, dinner:

There is something very unhealthy about Christianity (p 339)
27th February, 1942, midday:

It would always be disagreeable for me to go down to posterity as a man who made concessions in this field. I realize that man, in his imperfection, can commit innumerable errors-- but to devote myself deliberately to errors, that is something I cannot do. I shall never come personally to terms with the Christian lie. Our epoch Uin the next 200 yearse will certainly see the end of the disease of Christianity.... My regret will have been that I couldn't... behold ." (p 278)

BluSTi

Ahh, now I see. So the individual in question was a bit insulted, but had the good sense to "let it slide," but the rest of his "friends" where the ones whipped into a frenzy over such an egregious assault on their religion?

I sense a common theme...

Yasmin
Yasmin

LOL, I don't think reporting something to the news is a "religious frenzy".

Walking into a grocery store and shooting a congress woman and a bunch of bystanders? That's a religious frenzy.

Walking into a Sikh gurudwara and shooting a bunch of worshippers because you think they're Muslim? That's a religious frenzy.

Walking into a children's camp and shooting a bunch of innocent kids because you think they're brainwashed into supporting Muslims, after you set off a bomb downtown? That's a religious frenzy.

BluSTi
BluSTi

Apparently, I can't write a comment because of profanity, however, there is NO profanity in the comment I would have written.

But, Yasmin, here's my point, you could take the high road, and leave an inconsequential comment made by an ignorant person alone, or you could be insulted, have your friends get insulted, and turn it into a bigger monster of a problem than it ever should have been.

High road or low road, up to you and yours...

Something just doesn't add up. If the dude is asking about ingredients, why answer with a statement regarding shipping?

Does NOBODY else see that it just doesn't make sense?

I'm not condoning his comment, surely it IS rude, but it's so bizarre, it doesn't fit the context of the question. Not even by a little bit.

My $.02, I think the screen shot has been doctored.

bozhack

I've wondered what the ingredients are too (for allergy reasons). Especially when buying their product from street vendors and restaurants, those employees never seem to know either.

alisalee03
alisalee03

This is not true. I have a screen shot of the conversation. I have sent it to the news outlets. We are friends with him and the ones who posted it on Reddit.

NO WHERE ON THE POST DOES IT SAY PAKISTAN. IT SAID SHERIDAN, WYOMING. NO WHERE ON THE POST DOES THE COMPANY ANSWER THE QUESTION ABOUT THE INGREDIANTS. NO WHERE ON THE POST DID THE CUSTOMER EVER ASK ABOUT SHIPPING.

Classic case of corporate trying to cover his butt. If there was a way for me to post the screen shot on here I would, but I've emailed it to the author.

Inflammatory comments?

Good grief, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle should do a story about their web site's comment pages!

The amount of inflammatory anti-Christian comments the Bozeman Chronicle allows on its website is disturbing.

This Wilcoxen's Ice Cream commentis nothing in comparison to anti-Christian bigotry spewed forth by liberals such as magicdragon, brandonshannon, rattus, FlipSide, Shenanigans, et al. on the Chronicle's website.

Will we see the Bozeman Chronicle doing a story on the anti-Christian bigotry expressed by the liberal commentators on its website?

Yasmin
Yasmin

Aww it must be difficult being a Christian in a Christian majority country, where your religious ideals (no gay marriage, no abortion, no drinking alcohol on Sunday) are still being pushed down the throats of everyone else.

Potera
Potera

It is interesting how most liberals hate Christianity and how that expression of antiChristian hate speech is okay with liberals.

BluSTi
BluSTi

I'm fairly conservative and I hate ANYBODY who pushes their own views down other people's throats. Christian, Muslim, Islamic, Hindu, or Athiest.

critch

What does them being liberals have anything to do with it? Most liberals are Christians just like most Conservatives are Christians.

Judging by the fact that most conservatives don't practice what they preach, I'd stop talking. Liberals seem to be far more Christian in their actions than Conservatives in their words.

pelagius

Amen and thank you for trying to get the word out that there are many, many Christian Liberals.

Potera

Just watching the Democrat convention the other week and the vitriol expressed by Democrats over the inclusion of God in the party platform leads me to believe that at least half of the liberals are godless liberals.

Racism is about a person's race, not religion. FYI

Christianity is attacked frequently by liberals on this website but it isn't racism, it's bigotry.

Yasmin
Yasmin

And this post was about the assumed race of the poster, e.g. that he is of South Asian descent. Don't you think you'd be offended if someone assumed that you were Mexican because you're Christian?

Potera
Potera

No, not at all.

You need to learn the difference between a person's race and their religion. If you hate someone because of their religion it is bigotry, not racism.

YpsyCyb
YpsyCyb

First off "Kosher gelatin"? He's Muslim not Jewish. That's racist. Second, he never answered if it was pork gelatin which is what the guy asked anyway. Claim it's not racist all you want. If it was an African American and the comment was made that they don't deliver to Compton, it would have been the same response. Not only that but it SAID right on the post where he was posting from. This is nothing but the company trying to cover its behind.

i_like_pie
i_like_pie

I had to make an account just to respond to this. Many Muslims in America will purchase Kosher products because they are similar in that, for this case, neither eat pork. So actually they DID answer his question by saying they use Kosher gelatin. So no, that's not racist. What he said originally? That was racist. See the difference?

pelagius
pelagius

Agreed.

pelagius
pelagius

Neither followers of Judaism nor Islam eat any products containing pork. So....Kosher is a sign that it's safe for BOTH to eat.

Yasmin
Yasmin

Actually I'm Muslim and I specifically seek out products made with Kosher gelatin, just because I know they don't have any pork in the gelatin.

Little Debbie is a good example of a company that uses Kosher gelatin, and they also have SMORES and their own version of Rice Krispy Treats which are awesome for a Muslim who generally can't eat these due to pork gelatin being used.

I mean, I don't think most Americans (except Jews, Muslims and Vegetarians/Vegans) realize how pervasive gelatin is. I've found it in cereal, Pop-tarts, and even DONUTS.

This is absolutely not a case of religion being taken to the extreme. The person simply asked for information so that they could eat Wilcoxson’s icecream without violating their faith.

Instead of responding with information, Schaeffer responded rudely and (intentionally or unintentionally) with a hint of racism. Many people, muslims and not, were offended by his comment. Even he is apologizing. If this was a case of "muslims needing to get over themselves," he wouldn't need to apologize.

No, Yasmin, they wouldn't be considered a race, because that's a nationality.

The Muslim FB poster needs some thicker skin. How in the world can you get through life being so easily offended? The results of this 'victim' mentality are currently being seen across the Middle East. The ease at which so many people are willing to claim 'racism' is disgusting.

Yasmin
Yasmin

Well if you really want to get into it, the Middle East was victimized repeatedly by the U.S. Government, including that time we removed the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran and replaced him with a dictator. Oh and we've supported dictators in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, and Syria. That doesn't even get into the "constitutional monarchies" we've continued to support despite lack of popular support, like Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait....

No, they hate us for our freedom and they're just victims. We had nothing to do with it.

BluSTi

The ME wasn't exactly paradise in the centuries before the US started farting around there. The US had an isolationist policy up until WW1, so up until 1917, the region essentially had its own, typically brutal, wars. While we're at it, don't confuse the US with the Crusades, those were the Romans and the Catholic Church (see, the US hadn't even been discovered yet, except for the folks that were already here). So while you'd LOOOVE to blame the US for all of your woes (its ok, everybody else on the planet does it too), learn a little about some history and know that the whole ME region has been a region of war for centuries upon centuries.

Its sad to see a company like Wilcoxson's post such an off the cuff remark. If you read the question the individual praises the company for making great ice cream. Sure seemed like it was the perfect opportunity for Schaeffer to thank the individual for supporting their company and then answer the question. Being "overwhelmed with work" is no excuse to post these types of remarks.

Yasmin

Pakistanis, however, belong to a race. And if someone assumes that, because of a religious affiliation, they belong to a race then that indeed makes it a racist remark.

It's especially racist to Pakistani Christians because it implies they don't exist, that all Muslims are Pakistanis and therefore all Pakistanis are Muslims.

Maybe Schaeffer should have just answered his question instead of blowing him off with a snide comment. Next time you ask someone a legitimate question, I hope they blow you off and call you an obese and uneducated American so you'll see how it feels.

You mean like I'm going to blow off your comment because you're obtuse?
