The Montana chapter of the Americans For Prosperity Foundation gave its first Milton Friedman Champion of Education Freedom Award on Tuesday to Greg and Susan Gianforte of Bozeman for their support of school choice.

The event was held at Petra Academy, a private Christian and classical school supported by the Gianfortes. The couple recently pledged $4.6 million from their family foundation to give scholarships to hundreds of Montana students to attend private schools. Greg Gianforte founded RightNow Technologies, a Bozeman high-tech company sold last year to Oracle Corp.

Henry Kriegel, deputy state director of Americans For Prosperity, said the 100th anniversary of the birth of Friedman, the late Nobel prize-winning economist, is being celebrated in 45 states and other countries. Friedman’s theories support free markets and limited government.
