The Gardiner Ranger District has closed an area of the Gallatin National Forest east of Cooke City where the carcass of a grizzly bear killed after it attacked a hunter last weekend is now attracting other bears.

The 20- to 25-year-old male bear mauled a hunter in the Forage Creek area. The hunter’s companion shot the bear and accidentally shot the hunter too, according to the Park County Sheriff’s Department. Neither of the men have been identified.

The emergency closure applies to an area about 2.5 miles east of Cooke City, according to Gardiner District Ranger Mary Maj, and affects Hunting Unit #316, north of U.S. Highway 212 and south of the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness.
