Bozeman woman admits to federal identity theft, forgery charges
A Bozeman woman pleaded guilty Monday to federal bank fraud and aggravated identity theft charges stemming from the theft and forgery of checks.
Denise Shawnell Burland, 35, admitted to the charges in U.S. District Court in Missoula and remained incarcerated at the request of the federal government.
According to court records, Burland passed thousands of dollars in stolen checks at various stores and banks in the fall of 2005.
Investigators learned that Burland had stolen business and payroll checks and manipulated them to insert her own name, according to court records. Burland then signed and cashed the checks.
Burland faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine when she is sentenced March 6, 2008.
