Three Forks talc company reduces emissions
Rio Tinto Minerals announced Friday that its Three Forks talc milling operation achieved a 26 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
The reduction was achieved by increasing the company's efficiency and investing in equipment upgrades.
“We are very pleased with the return on this investment,” Pat Downey, director of Montana operations, said in a written news release. “Our team has a strong track record of improving safety and productivity through innovation, and they have been able to transfer that skill to reducing our environmental footprint as well.”
Natural gas and water consumption also were reduced by 26 percent and 15 percent, respectively, although production rates increased.
Rio Tinto Materials plans on building on its achievements by assessing its energy use at all of its sites. The company's goal is to identify new opportunities and set more goals to reduce energy consumption and emissions.
Rio Tinto Minerals employs 175 people at its three operations in Montana, including the Yellowstone Mine and the Three Forks and Sappington mills. The company supplies talc products to paper, paint and polymer companies around the world.
