Poco cuts live, local album
Further proof that Bozeman may be morphing into a destination market for musicians, Poco has released an album recorded north of town.
"Bareback at the Big Sky" is the band's first live, acoustic record. It was cut at Dave Goodwin's studio-equipped home in front of a local audience during two shows in April.
"There's never been anything recorded in an environment like this that communicates to listeners as if they were there," said Goodwin, who also co-produced and played harmonica on one track of the album.
"Bareback at Big Sky" was released worldwide Sept. 20 on Sony/Red. The following week, it nearly cracked the top 100 on Amazon.com, but has fallen since then.
Goodwin said the album has still exceeded expectations, especially since the band hasn't invested in a major marketing push.
Poco, one of the longest-lasting country-rock bands, was formed in 1968 by two members of the dissolved Buffalo Springfield, Richie Furay and Jim Messina.
Guitarist Rusty Young soon joined, and while musicians have come and gone, Young has remained with the group ever since. He co-produced "Bareback" with Goodwin.
Poco has released more than a dozen albums over the past three decades. "Legend," released in 1978, was the band's best-selling record and included the hit single "Crazy Love."
So far, "Bareback at Big Sky" has been well received by Poco fans, at least in the chat room on the band's official Web site. It hasn't yet been reviewed by a major publication.
The fact the album was recorded locally and released on a major label was an accomplishment for Goodwin, who has pushed hard to sell Bozeman as a destination market for musicians.
He has continued to lure bands to his northside home and said more albums will be cut there in the near future.
"This is definitely a sign of things to come," Goodwin said. "And this album really helps get this place on the map.
"Bozeman has the potential."
Poco will return to Montana in December to play a series of shows promoting the album.
"Bareback at Big Sky" is available at record stores everywhere.
